Overview of the
Binford Elementary Music Program

At Binford Elementary, Grades 3,4,5 & 6, students experience the following knowledges and skills in music by:

  1. Performing
  2. Identifying elements of music
  3. Creating/Improvising
  4. Appreciation
Bloomington community resources are available for field trip experiences in music to students in Grades 3,4,5,& 6:
  1. Indiana University School of Music Concert Series for Elementary Students
  2. Lotus World Music and Arts Festival (September: Education Day)
  3. Bloomington Symphony Youth Concert
  4. Indiana University Auditorium Youth Series/Smithsonian

First Semester Music at Binford

In September, a music ensemble is organized to present world music at the annual "Lotus World Music & ARts Festival". A Binford Swing Choir from the sixth grade classes performs in the Bloomington Community (Festival of Trees) Hospital Benefit and has a program of holiday music which it present for Bloomington service organizations. The eighteen classes each prepare a 25 minute holiday program of handchimes, choral music, Orff ensembles and folk dancing. Every child in the school is involved in these activities.

Second Semester Music at Binford

Fifth and sixth grade students are trained for the "Circle the State With Song" Indiana choral festival which occurs in February. This year in Area V, over 450 elementary students and 250 middle school (Including sixth grade) presented two separate concerts at Center Grove High School at Greenwood. Each group presented eight choral selections of two and three part harmony. Guest clinicians conducted the concerts. Binford was represented by 10 fifth graders in the elementary concert and 28 sixth graders in the middle school concert.
In early April, all the 120 fifth grade students and 120 sixth grade students will present separate choral concerts accompanied by Orff instruments, handchimes, and keyboard.
Each fourth grade class prepares separate programs of "Indiana" music and history. The third grade classes each present in May their musical plays. Once again, each child at Binford is involved ina suitable grade level performance.
